As Alvin is a custom character in the A Song of Ice and Fire series, allow me to write up some of his background.
As you may or may not know, House Reyne no longer exists in Westeros. The reasons behind it not existing is spoiler, but there was some dispute between the Reynes and House Lannister, who were their leige lords at the time.
And here comes the made up stuff
The Reynes were thought to have been exterminated, but a pair of them, Ser Wyllis Reyne and Lady Helena Reyne neé Crakehall, were on a trip to Braavos at the time. Hearing what happened, purely by chance, Wyllis, now in all intents and purposes Lord of House Reyne, decided to stay in Braavos.
They lived quite happily, had two children, Alvin and Ameria, and were mostly in peace.
Lord Wyllis died at a comfortable old age, leaving his son, Alvin, to become the lord of the house.
Once Alvin was 18, he returned to Westeros, leaving his mother and sister still in Braavos. He landed in the North, at White Harbor, and decided to explore the country before making any decisions. Unfortunately, the group of knights and men-at-arms he had with him were ambushed by bandits. Alvin fled under advisement from his captain, and never saw them again.
The young lord spent a few months wandering, before he was eventually encountered upon by some Stark men-at-arms. Noticing a lordly sigil on Alvin's clothing, they escorted him back to Winterfell, where he appealed for asylum under Lord Eddard Stark and became a Stark bannerman.
This can all be seen as before/during the first few chapters of A Game of Thrones.
